Marisa Bacher grew up in Valsesia in northern Piedmont. Her family raised cows next to one of the Alps’ highest peaks, Monte Rosa. In 2016, she had a calling to make wine and made her way south to Barolo, where she worked for the very underrated and incredibly kind winemaker, Mario Fontana at Cascina Fontana in Castiglione Faletto.
In 2020, when a 1-hectare plot of 60-year-old heirloom Dolcetto and Barbera in Monforte d’Alba came up for rent, she jumped on the opportunity, and Rosso Bacher was born. That first year she made just 200 bottles of wine while still working at Cascina Fontana.
The wines are farmed and raised organically with minimal intervention. These are wines of elegance and finesse, rather than power and austerity.
Right now, she produces just three wines in miniscule quantities. I feel so lucky to be catching this rising star on her way up!
